SEMIS - Steel Billets

钢坯, çelik ingotlar, स्टिल बिलेट्स, স্টিল বিলেটস

Steel billet manufactured through continuous casting (CCM) is a semi-finished product of steel that is used as the raw material for producing finished steel products like TMT rebars, wire rods, structural sections, and other rolled products.

  • Semi-finished steel product cast from molten steel, later rolled into rebar, wire rods, or structural steel.

  • Shape: Square or rectangular cross-section.

  • Use: Raw material for construction steel, bars, rods, and other long products.

1. Low-Carbon Steel Billets

  • Carbon Content: ≤ 0.25% C.

  • Properties: High ductility, toughness, weldability; relatively lower strength compared to medium/high carbon.

  • Applications: TMT rebars (IS 1786), wire rods, nails, automotive sheet components.

  • Advantages: Easy fabrication, good bendability, cost-effective.

2. Corrosion-Resistant Alloy Steel Billets

  • Alloying Elements: Cr, Cu, Ni (in varying proportions).

  • Properties: Enhanced corrosion resistance, better durability in aggressive environments like coastal or industrial regions.

  • Applications: Corrosion-resistant rebars (IS 1786 CRS grade, ASTM A706), bridges, marine structures, chemical plants.

  • Advantages: Lower maintenance, longer service life, reduced life-cycle cost.

3. Ferritic Stainless-Steel Billets

  • Grade Example: AISI 410L, IS 16651:2017 (Grade G).

  • Composition: 10–18% Chromium, very low carbon (<0.03%).

  • Properties: Magnetic, excellent resistance to stress-corrosion cracking and chloride-induced corrosion, good oxidation resistance.

  • Applications: High-performance rebars (ASTM A1035), coastal infrastructure, tunnels, nuclear and power projects.

  • Advantages: Longest durability, superior corrosion protection, sustainability (100% recyclable).

Low- Carbon Steel Billet

Good ductility and malleability.

Suitable for hot rolling into various products.

Relatively lower strength than alloy, but higher weldability and workability.

Properties
Applications

Raw material for TMT bars (Fe 500, 550, etc.).

Used in wire drawing, angle and channel rolling, and pipe making.

Serves as the base feedstock in re-rolling mills.

Alloy Steel Billet

Higher strength-to-weight ratio.

Improved toughness, hardness, fatigue resistance.

Can be customized for specific mechanical or thermal requirements

Properties
Applications

Automotive parts (crankshafts, connecting rods).

Tool steels, wear-resistant parts.

High-performance construction steels.

Stainless Steel Billet

(Ferritic)

Corrosion resistant (not as much as Austenitic stainless).

Stress corrosion cracking resistance is better than austenitic.

Good thermal conductivity & resistance to oxidation.

Properties
Applications

Automotive exhaust systems.

Industrial chimneys, heat exchangers.

Kitchenware, washing machine drums.

Building/architectural applications.
